Angst Skvadron is a project formed by T. Nefas, also of Urgehal and Beastcraft fame. Inspired by extraterrestrial life, the debut album “Flukt” was created with the help of Lars Froislie of amongst others Endezzma.
The music of Angst Skvadron has a similar base as Urgehal, inspired by the same vibe from early 90’s Black Metal. Apart from being slightly slower than T. Nefas’ other band, the material on “Flukt” is also meant as more of an experimental vessel, incorporating atmosphere-enhancing effects and elements from 70’s prog rock. That doesn’t necessarily make the album progressive, as it mostly concerns the addition of psychedelic sound effects and spacey keyboards. A fair part of the album consists of slower melancholic riffs, in which the drum patterns allow to illustrate the more progressive nature. The production is clear enough to leave room for the keyboards and often melodic guitar riffs, but still has a raw edge to retain the old school connection. Some of the highlights include ‘Silent Light, Alien Night’, ‘The Astroid Haemorhoids And The Drunken Sailor’ (which essentially sounds like Led Zeppelin’s ‘Immigrant Song’ meets Black Metal) and ‘Beyond Andromeda’.
Angst Skvadron shows there’s a well though-out concept, resulting in a highly entertaining old school Black Metal album with some interesting additions. “Flukt” may be a bit too experimental for the more conventional Black Metal fans, but is well worth it for those looking for something slightly out of the box.
