With their origins firmly rooted in some of the leading Swedish thrash bands such as Darkane and Soilwork, The Defaced released their first 2 albums in 2001 and 2003. Anno 2008 only the guitar tandem of Swaney and Klas Ideberg remains, with the other members leaving over the years. With the process of finding new members inevitably causing delays, a new release now finally comes with the birth of “Anomaly”. Given the roots of the band members, the musical style on “Anomaly” hardly comes as a surprise, with the sound leaning mostly towards Soilwork. Similarly progressing towards a more melodic style over time, The Defaced combine a small dose of furious Thrash Metal with groove and loads of melodies. In a similar fashion, the vocals are diverse, adding a lot of clean parts to the fold in addition to the screams. A track like ‘In Solitude Entwined’ even reminds me of Sentenced. I’ve personally given up on Soilwork for a while now, but The Defaced presents more of the original Swedish Thrash Metal values and therefore sound more interesting. However, I would have liked “Anomaly” to pack more of a punch, longing for more songs similar to ‘Imprisoned Insolence’. This is also illustrated in the mix, with the heavy drum sound obscuring the heaviness of the guitars, like for instance in ‘Flame To Life’. “Anomaly” is definitely a good album if you like the typical Swedish melodic Thrash Metal, but hardly adds anything new to the scene.
