The Mystery
Soulcatcher
Limited Access Records
When this CD arrived on my doorstep the artwork and the press-sheet that’s states The Mystery plays female fronted melodic metal made me a bit worried as I feel this genre is overcrowded at the moment. Next to that, the fact the band already started out in 1996 and this is already their 4th album was worrying as well, since I had never heard of this German band before and I am quite familiar with lots of acts.
So, the moment I started listening to this album it was quite a relief to find out The Mystery isn’t about the female fronted style we know from bands like Epica and After Forever. The Mystery simply stands for melodic and catchy heavy metal. It has to be said it’s not original at all but I’ve got the idea that this doesn’t matter at all to this act, as they come across as a band that simply wants to play music they feel comfortable with. Despite the unoriginality “Soulcatcher” has become an album that is easy to comprehend, due to its catchiness. Vocalist Korry Schadwell, who came into the band in 2006, has quite a good voice. She can be compared to Doro Pesch a bit; they’ve got the same sort of intonation.
So, “Soulcatcher” can’t be seen as a highlight but it’s not bad either; they’re an average band and there’s nothing wrong with that.
