The Gates of Slumber
Conqueror
I Hate Records
We at Quintessence interviewed The Gates of Slumber’s front man Karl Simon just after he left the studio. He was very enthusiastic about the way “Conqueror” turned out. Now the album has been released and I can only stress his enthusiasm was sincere as this third full-length by these Americans is a damn fine album. Still very much classic doom in the vein of acts like Saint Vitus and Cirith Ungol, but with a more upbeat vibe in several songs which should make this an album that could be appreciated by other metal fans as well. Take the opening song ‘Trapped in the Web’; what a way to open an album. The title track ‘Conqueror’ is a very strong cut too and ‘Ice Worm’, which will also be featured on a vinyl 12” released by the band themselves is also a great track. ‘Eyes of the Liar’ is a song that has strong lyrics and although it could be about anyone I am sure people who are familiar with The Gates of Slumber and their surroundings will know who this is about.
I actually can mention every song on the album but let’s just tell you there are no weak tracks present here. The Gates of Slumber simply get better and better with every album they release. The sound is good, Karl actually delivers some great vocals and yes, there might be people out there who think his vocals suck, but that’s simply a matter of taste. “Conqueror” simply is an excellent slab of true metal. The album is available in the States through Profound Lore, who did a nice looking digipack version. It will also be available on vinyl through Iron Kodex soon. So wherever you are, be sure to pick up this album!!
