This is the second album for American quartet Pharoah, funny thing is that I got to know this band because of drummer Chris Black’s other band Superchrist, which is an awesome old school heavy metal n roll band in the tradition of Motörhead – they are very much worth checking out, so get one of their albums if you have the chance! Anyway, where Superchrist might be a tongue-in-cheek hail to the ‘gods of heavy metal’, Pharoah is a lot more serious, not only in their image but certainly also in composing and songwriting. With clear similarities to Iced Earth, Jag Panzer, Iron Maiden, Steel Prophet and Annihilator for instance, they find themselves in the highest ranks of the American heavy metal, something that is only given to a few. Only the powerful vocals of Tim Aymar who made himself immortal with the heavy metal band Control Denied by the late Chuck Schuldiner. His voice totally adds to the awesome old school feeling that this album breathes. Funny thing is that Pharaoh is unmistakably American sounding heavy metal, but the links with NWOBHM are very clear to hear. And with a weak spot for such heavy metal you can’t go wrong with Pharaoh. It is now time to kick this band under their metallic asses, I mean, why are these guys not on the big European heavy metal festivals?
