Since Obituary returned to the scene in 2005 with “Frozen in Time” they continued doing what they started out with when they debuted with “Slowly We Rot” in 1989. On “Darkest Day” we get more of the same and I haven’t got any problems with that at all, I completely dig what these guys are doing. Compared to “Xecutioner’s Return” from 2007 this album is even a step forward again. The main difference compared to that album is the solos of Ralph Santolla. In 2007 he was hanging around in the studio and recorded some solos for the sake of it, as Alan West turned out to be the problem child of the band. This time around the solos are definitely part of the songs where on the previous album they were standing on their own. Trevor Peres’ guitar tone is heavy as fuck and that’s what a death metal album needs. Compared to that album by the Tardy Brothers this shows exactly how rhythm guitars on a death metal album should sound. Other than that you won’t find anything shocking, this simply is a killer Obituary album, once again.
